Jennifer Gefsky

Co-Founder of Après

Today’s guest is Jennifer Gefsky, a co-founder of Après, a digital recruiting platform that connects women looking to re-enter the workforce. (Après means “after” in French). It launched this month to more than 10,000 subscribers.

Jennifer is a lawyer and practiced labor and employment law before becoming Deputy General Counsel and one of the highest ranking women at Major League Baseball. At 30, she was recognized by Crain’s New York Business as a “40 Under 40 Rising Star.” After almost 10 years at MLB, Jennifer “retired” until her and her business partner Niccole Kroll came up with the idea for Après.

One of the first questions I ask is, “What took so long?” We’ve known for a while now that women have a hard time transitioning back into the workforce after being home. This idea of opting out, even for just a year or two, can be detrimental to one’s career. What gave rise to this website now and why is Jennifer passionate about this?

Also curious to learn: How do you explain the gap on your resume? And what about men? They’re becoming stay at home dads and finding challenges, as they re-enter the workforce.

One of my favorite quotes from the interview: “The concept of earning something on your own & then learning how to take care of it is an invaluable lesson.” – Click To Tweet
